Lipid profile (12 hours), fasting blood sugar (8–12 hours), liver and kidney function tests (8 hours preferred) and abdominal ultrasound (6 hours). CBC, thyroid, HbA1c, urine tests and most hormone tests need no fasting at all.

Yes, plain water is allowed and actually helps — it makes the vein easier to find. Tea, milk, juice and cigarettes break the fast.

Generally no — keep taking prescribed medicines unless your doctor says otherwise. Two exceptions: take the sample before your morning thyroxine dose, and stop antacids or PPIs two weeks before an H. pylori test.

Usually 3 to 5 ml for one profile, and rarely more than 10 ml even for a full package — a fraction of what is taken when you donate blood.

We telephone you and your referring doctor immediately rather than waiting for you to collect the report. Critical values are always re-run before we call.

Yes. Reports are handed only to the patient or a person the patient nominates, and sensitive tests such as hepatitis, HIV and fertility testing are handled with particular care.
