Frequently asked questions
Do I need to be fasting for a thyroid test?
No. But if you take thyroxine (Thyrox, Eltroxin), take the sample BEFORE your morning dose, otherwise the T4 reading will be falsely high.
Which thyroid test is best — TSH alone or the full profile?
TSH alone (Rs. 900) is enough for routine screening and for monitoring a stable patient. A first diagnosis, pregnancy, or an abnormal TSH needs the full T3, T4 and TSH profile at Rs. 2,200.
Is a thyroid ultrasound needed as well?
Only if the gland is swollen or a nodule can be felt. We do neck and thyroid ultrasound with colour Doppler in the same visit.
